Policy Update: September 07- September 14

Over 250 people have died and thousands are still stranded across the state, including Srinagar. 

 

The central government had appealed against a Bombay high court ruling in 2013 which had said that reservation in appointment would include promotion and selection, and not just direct recruitment. 

 

In addition to the district committees, the government has also set up a state-level review committee to fast track trials, most possibly within a year from the date of framing of charges. The move followed directions of the Supreme Court and the Union Home Ministry. 

 

Last year, the commission had declared six national parties -- Congress, BJP, NCP, CPI, CPI-M and BSP -- as public authorities, thereby bringing them under the ambit of the Right to Information Act.

 

Says they could be granted OBC status and consequent benefits only if the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) decides so. Also seeks a declaration that lesbian, gay and bisexual would be kept out of this class. 

 

The Supreme Court reserves its judgment on cancellation of over 200 coal blocks while the government expressed its willingness to re-auction the blocks if cancelled. 

 

Around 21 per cent of the 43,200 villages in the region are not connected to any mobile network. The project will cover 8,621 villages through 6,673 towers.

 

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its approval for Phase-V of the UID scheme for undertaking enrolments in the four States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.

Found the urban cooperative banks (UCBs) with deposits of over 2 lakh crore rupees being misused for money laundering. Asks state governments asked to take stringent action against the banks.
